Born in Lockerbie Eric was educated at Lockerbie primary and academy. On leaving school he became a police cadet at Lockerbie police station with Dumfries
and Galloway constabulary. He remained here until he was appointed a police constable stationed in Dumfries. After 18 months in this role and another training spell at the Scottish police college, he was posted to Gretna where he remained for 14 years. He was promoted to sergeant and posted to Dumfries, initially performing duty in Dumfries Town. He was then moved to the force control room where he remained until he was promoted to inspector in charge of communications. His final appointment was as emergency planning officer, a position he held until he retired in 30 years service. He then took up the post of child care registration and inspection officer with Dumfries and Galloway Council and then with the Scottish care commission. He subsequently was appointed the club secretary at Queen of the South Football Club a post he held for 6 years until he retired.
